The history of the candle: from sacred fire to committed craftsmanship

A symbol of light, warmth and contemplation, the candle has traversed the centuries without ever losing its evocative power. Long used as a source of light, it is today chosen for its atmosphere, its aesthetic and its values. At Helya, it reclaims its full meaning, through a noble and ancestral material: beeswax.

A thousand-year history, from ritual flame to everyday object

The history of the candle stretches back more than 5,000 years. The earliest civilisations — in Egypt, China and Rome — used primitive forms of candles, made from plant stems coated in tallow (animal fat) or resin. These objects were used to provide light, to pray, and to mark the passage of time.

In the Middle Ages, beeswax emerged as a nobler alternative. Unlike tallow, which produced a strong odour and black smoke, beeswax burns slowly, with a luminous and clean flame. It was reserved for churches, monasteries and royal ceremonies.

The emergence of paraffin in the nineteenth century, derived from petroleum, transformed candle-making. Less costly and easier to mass-produce, it became the industry standard. Yet it is far from matching the natural, aesthetic and ecological qualities of beeswax.

Beeswax: a rare, noble and committed material

A precious alchemy between bees and nature

Beeswax is naturally secreted by honeybees, which use it to build the combs of their hive. It is estimated that approximately 8 to 10 kg of honey are needed to produce 1 kg of wax. This process demands considerable energy from the colony, making it a rare and precious raw material.

It is for this reason that it was long considered a luxury product, reserved for sacred spaces.

An ecological, pure and lasting choice

At Helya, we work exclusively with 100% natural, untreated beeswax, sourced locally from beekeepers in our region. By choosing their wax, we actively contribute to supporting the beekeeping industry, essential to biodiversity, and to honouring an ancestral farming expertise.

Beeswax is the most noble, and also the most costly, of natural waxes. Its price reflects not only its rarity, but also its incomparable quality.

An exceptional quality of burn

Beeswax offers a slow, even and clean burn, free from black smoke and toxic emissions. It naturally emits a warm, golden light, very close to the solar spectrum, creating a soothing and natural atmosphere.

Its organic cotton wick, carefully selected, ensures a steady flame and safe use. It also releases negative ions, which can help purify indoor air by neutralising certain dust particles, mould and atmospheric pollutants.

Finally, beeswax lasts 2 to 3 times longer than industrial candles made from paraffin or stearin.

Helya: ethical craftsmanship

Every Helya candle is shaped by hand in our Anjou workshop, with patience and exacting care. No mass production: each piece is unique, the result of meticulous work where nothing is left to chance.

Our commitments:

  • Local, pure, unrefined beeswax

  • Organic cotton wicks, guaranteed free from harmful substances

  • Direct support for beekeepers in our region

  • Short supply chain production

  • Exceptional artisan craftsmanship

  • Natural honey scent, with no artificial addition

  • A clean, steady and luminous flame

Why choose a beeswax candle today?

In an era defined by speed, overconsumption and mass production, choosing a beeswax candle is choosing respect, quality and durability.

It is choosing a living, ethical, noble material. It is giving yourself — or giving another — an object of light that carries meaning, crafted with care, far from any standardisation.
