Why make beeswax candles?

Beeswax is the oldest material used for lighting.

It burns slowly, with a golden flame and a natural honey scent. It contains no paraffin or synthetic fragrance.

At Helya, the wax is 100% French, harvested less than 50 km from Angers . The wicks are made of organic cotton. Nothing is added. This is the raw material you work with during the workshop.

Making your own natural candle also means understanding where it comes from. From the beehive to the flame, each step has meaning.

The schedule for the candle-making workshop

The workshop is led by Camille, founder of Helya and Master Wax Maker . Trained for a year by a beekeeper, she transmits simple and precise know-how.

  1. The welcome and the tasting. We start by tasting the honey. To understand that the wax and the honey come from the same place.

  2. The discovery of wax. Its origin, its properties, why it burns better than vegetable waxes or paraffin.

  3. The dipped candle. The age-old technique: dip the wick into the melted wax, layer after layer, until you obtain a pair of dipped candles .

  4. The braided candle. A more sculptural variation. Two candles worked while still warm to create a unique shape.

  5. The rolled candle. A sheet of embossed wax, hand-rolled around a wick. Quick, heat-free, and always a success.

You leave with 3 candles : a pair of dipped candles, a pair of braided candles and a rolled candle. All in a Helya bag.
